Insect-friendly flower bulbs and tubers

Many insect species, such as wild bees and bumblebees, start foraging as early as February and need nourishment. If you want to support them, be sure to plant early-flowering bulbs in autumn. Varieties like crocuses, winter aconites, and grape hyacinths provide nectar and pollen early in the season when few other plants are in bloom. Later on, ornamental alliums are especially popular. Wild species and varieties with single, unfilled flowers are particularly suitable as a food source. But it's not just spring that counts: if you want to ensure a supply of food in late summer and autumn, you should plant dahlias and gladioli. As late bloomers, they fill the supply gap before winter dormancy.
