Maya mix, also known as "Milpa", is an ancient compantion planting from Central and North America. This ideal combination of corn, beans and squash can also yield a great harvest in our gardens even in small spaces, and enrich our soils. Sweet corn (Sugrano) serves as a climbing aid for pole beans (Neckarkönigin). The beans, with the help of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their root nodules, gather nitrogen and return some of the nutrients that corn consumes back to the soil. The squash (Sweet Dumpling) covers the ground, keeping it moist, which benefits the soil life. Tip: In spring, spread compost and bone meal generously over the bed. For example, plant the Maya mix in a 4 m² square. Plant 4 to 6 squash plants along the edges and place the corn in the center, grouped with the beans. Leave about 5 cm between the beans and the corn. The mix works best if the corn and squash are pre-grown indoors. Only sow the pole beans when the corn has grown to a height of approx. 10-15 cm in the bed.
