Viola tricolor, the small flowered, Wild Pansy or Heartsease likes sandy loam, nutrient-rich garden soils and grows in full sun or half-shade. Violets are grown for autumn planting and thyen flower the following spring. The flowers are edible and make striking salad garnish.
