Many insect species, such as wild bees and bumblebees, start foraging as early as February and need nourishment. If you want to support them, be sure to plant early-flowering bulbs in autumn. Varieties like crocuses, winter aconites, and grape hyacinths provide nectar and pollen early in the season when few other plants are in bloom. Later on, ornamental alliums are especially popular. Wild species and varieties with single, unfilled flowers are particularly suitable as a food source.
