A salad doesn't have to consist of the usual classic lettuce varieties. It can be enhanced in both colour and flavour with other leafy vegetables and herbs. For the 'Spicy Salad Garden', we’ve put together a colourful and tasty salad mix that’s easy to grow and can be harvested over a long period.

All varieties in this set are suitable for outdoor cultivation, as well as for growing on balconies or in raised beds. They can be sown throughout the gardening season from March to September and harvested as baby leaf salads. For this, seeds are sown more densely in rows (around 3-5 cm apart), and the young salad leaves can be picked after just six weeks.

Baby Leaf Salad 'Di Vino'

• beautiful, glossy, deep wine-red leaves
• as a cut-and-come-again lettuce, continues to regrow vigorously

Oak Leaf Lettuce 'Till'

• attractive green rosette with pale yellow heart and pointed leaves
• fast-growing and bolt-resistant

Oak Leaf Lettuce 'Red Salad Bowl'

• Red oakleaf-type lettuce with tender, highly flavoursome leaves
• forms very large, loose heads

• young leaves and 10-20 cm long shoot tips can be eaten raw or lightly steamed
• flavour is mildly bitter, floral, spicy, and aromatic

Beetroot 'Foniro'

• leaves can be harvested continuously; for raw use in salads, they should be no longer than 10 cm
• nutty, refreshing taste with a slight bitterness and pleasant earthy note

Curly Kale 'Red Russian Kale'

• young blue-green to violet leaves have a delicate, mildly aromatic flavour
• mature plants can be harvested well into winter

Rocket 'Ruca'

• fast-growing and ideal for sowing every four weeks for continuous harvest
• delicate leaves add a lively peppery kick to salads
